‘Vets on Call’ video series visits major US egg producer

Playicon

Ensuring the health and welfare of laying hens at Rose Acre Farms —the second largest egg producer in the US — is the subject of a two-part video of the popular “Vets on Call” YouTube series.

“It’s unfortunate people don’t know how birds are raised or where their eggs come from,” laments company veterinarian Dan Wilson as he visits egg-laying chicken farms in Indiana.

The birds that Wilson cares for are raised in various styles of houses including aviary-style and cage-style.

“It’s in our best interest to provide our birds everything they need, that they’re well-housed and not mistreated,” he explains. “If birds were mistreated, they would not let eggs.”

In a lighter moment, the video shows Wilson making the rounds and examining the body, bone and fat condition of the hens. And at one point, Wilson even speaks to them.

“I’ve just been around chickens a lot,” he says after imitating one of the thousands of birds under his care. “I like to make noises back to them.”

He later ads, ““I’m proud of our work. I’m happy we improve the quality of life of our birds. And we provide high quality food for people. It’s an amazing thing.”
